I have been testing and writing about an American Whiskey or Bourbon every month for the last two and a half years, but slowly I am running out of affordable bourbons available in SA to taste and write about.   I might have to switch over the Irish whiskey in a month or 2. Anyway, this week I am opening my first Koval, the Koval Bourbon whiskey.  It is available in SA through WhiskyBrother or Aficionado’s and a new distillery. Both to my collection and in age.

An afternoon with Jack Daniel’s & Woodford Reserve

The invite said Bar Ber Black Sheep…  My first thought … spelling error?  The song is BaBa black sheep.  But Google quickly corrected me and directed me to Rosebanks’ new hip and happening spot.  Park Corner, a  new development on the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Bolton Road in Johannesburg.  A barber and a bar combined.   A place to meet up with some friends and get a haircut.  All in 1 afternoon.  Quirky, but quite cool.  The function was the American Whisky tasting and food pairing experience with Brown Forman’s American Whiskey ambassador Cam Dawson together with Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve.

KFC and Bourbon pairings to try tonight

In my house, take away is a treat.  We only eat it when I have not had any time to cook, or when the weekend was just so lazy, that I could not bother.  One of our preferred options for take away is KFC.  And it seems that I am not alone in loving the crispy fried chicken.  Kentucky Friend Chicken (KFC) is the most prolific brand in South Africa, with over 800 stores spread across the land. The Kentucky in KFC and the Kentucky in Bourbon made me think… would the two work together?  You know I am always up for experimenting, so I this past weekend, off I went to KFC for a bucket of chicken.  John was in the mood for Zinger wings, so I grabbed a few of those as well.

How to pair Pizza and Whisky this weekend!

Some time ago I found the National Day Calendar that lists all the National Days celebrated in the USA.  O my word!  It has been a fabulous source of inspiration.  There are monthly observations listed, daily celebrations and even National Week observations.  The month of March is National Peanut Month, Umbrella Month, Frozen Food Month and Celery Month.  Celery is just too healthy and probably a bit strange to pair with whisky.  So I decided to theme my month of March as “take way food and drinks”.  Yes, the other side of the spectrum.  This month I am pairing a few great drams with well known fast foods.  And first up is my personal favorite – PIZZA and whisky.

Jim Beam White Label Bourbon Whiskey

The year 1795 was a busy year.  Wars started and ended, treaties were signed, country debts were paid,  Hayden released his 102 ’nd Symphony in B and Thomas Seddal harvested a 8.3-kg potato from his garden in Chester, England.  Funny all the things that history captures as important at the time.  This was also the year that Jim Beam was founded by a group of German farming immigrants.  Jacob Beam noticed how fertile the Kentucky region was for cereal farming and he grew corn and grains which he eventually used in his whiskey.
