Jim Beam Double Oak Bourbon

Jim Beam Double oak header

A couple of months ago I fell in love with a bourbon that was filled to the brim with malva pudding and dark sweet cherries.  The Woodford Reserve Double Oaked promised and delivered a wonderful taste experience.  At the same time, I also found the Jim Beam Double Oak in the shop and just had to try this too.  The Jim Beam Double Oak is CONSIDERABLY more affordable than the Woodford Reserve Double Oak.  Could I get the double oak taste experience at a more affordable price? And further, will this Jim Beam Double Oak rival my other Jim Beam favourite, the Jim Beam Black

Maker’s 46 Kentucky Bourbon

Makers 46 Kentucky Bourbon Header

The blood red wax top gives it away.  There is no mistaking a Maker’s Mark.  The golden liquid on the inside is just as distinct as the  red wax seal is.  John and I love our bottle of Maker’s Mark.  It needs replacing more frequently than any other of our bourbons.  Both of us have been lusting after the Maker’s 46 for some time.  On one of John’s frequent travels, he managed to get his hands on this release.    Not long after, I heard a bird whisper that the Maker’s 46 will be available in SA from October, so we don’t need to treat this bottle with care.  We will be able to replace it again without to much drama.

Malva pudding is a sweet dessert of Cape Malay origin and well loved throughout South Africa. It contains apricot jam and has a spongy caramelized texture. A cream sauce is poured over it while it is hot, and it is usually served hot with
custard or ice-cream  Some people add s Amarula liquor or brandy to the cream sauce .  In winter, it is PERFECT.  Warming, rich, delicious and decadent. Perfect for a Sunday lunch.  It is John’s favorite dessert, so we regularly make it.  However, how did Malva pudding get me to the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

National Bourbon Day: My top 6 Bourbons

National Bourbon Day header

The 14th of June is National Bourbon Day.  A whole day to celebrate the magic that is the golden liquid from the USA.   For a whiskey to classify as bourbon it must be made in the U.SA. In addition, its mash bill (mix of grains from which bourbon is distilled) must comprise at least 51% and no more than 79% Indian corn.  Besides corn, the other grains used, include malted barley and either rye or wheat. Bourbon must be aged at least two years in a new, charred oak barrel made from American White Oak.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel whiskey

Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Tennessee Whiskey header jack-daniels-single-barrel

During March this year, I got to meet Cam Dawson at a Jack Daniel’s function and taste a few interesting Jack Daniel’s releases. It was a great function that introduces a few whisky friends to more of how Jack Daniel’s is made.  We got to taste a variety of releases, however the Jack Daniel’s release that impressed me most, was the Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel.  I liked it so much, I went out and bought a bottle.  At R600 a bottle, it is not too expensive and quite readily available.
