Glenkinchie 12 yo Single Malt whisky

Time to move back down to the Scottish Lowlands this week.  The Lowlands has 3 well known malt distilleries, namely Auchentoshan, Bladnoch and Glenkinchie. Today I investigate Glenkinchie and especially the Glenkinchie 12 yo.   Lowland whiskies traditionally were softer and more floral compared to the more Northern releases.

Whisky for the white wine loving mom

Whisky for the white wine loving mom white wine header

Deadlines, and more deadlines to finish up projects.  On top of that you went house hunting in a new city with sick kids in tow and had to find new a suitable school for the little ones.  Pictures on property sites only show the good of the house.  You have seen enough water damage, funny architectural features and cat stained carpets to last you a lifetime.  Now you still need to pack the current house and finish up the school year, while hubby is already living far away.  Following on from my previous article about Red Wine,  if your glass of white wine is just not going to make this week better – it is time to bring out the big guns.

A flashback to my younger days: Bell’s Special Reserve

Bells Special Reserve blended whisky

One of my favourite whiskies during my student days was a Bell’s. It was a bit more upmarket than the really cheap nasty bottles with “whiskey” printed on it.  Best of all, it was affordable and accessible. We spent many a nights solving world problems around a bottle of Bell’s. But after university, my taste (and budget) changed and I have not had a Bell’s in many, many years. Because I associated it with cheap university days, it had very little appeal. But then Mark Friday did a blog post on the Bell’s Special Reserve I was intrigued. So what better time to try a Bell’s again.

Glenkinchie & Wensleydale Cheese

Glenkinchie 12 yo and Wensleydale cheese pairing

Woolworths has an interesting collection of cheeses and a while ago, John came home with a Wensleydale cheese with mango and ginger. We patiently waited for the weekend and then started to experiment. When we try whisky cheese pairings, we like to taste and read up on the cheese before looking at our whisky collection to see what might pair well. We usually choose 3 different whiskies to pair to see how the different whiskies pair with the chosen cheese.

Whisky and cheese pairing – Laphroaig & Stilton

Laphroaig Stilton cheese pairing

Whisky and cheese pairing is something that we see coming past our twitter feed on a regular basis and we decided to try it.  This past weekend John bought a wedge of Blue Stilton cheese, his favourite cheese, from Checkers who have a big variety of interesting cheese. He paired it with a Laphroaig 10 yo Cask Strength and tweeted about it. We received such a positive response to the tweet that we decided to write a post about a whisky and cheese pairing. Traditionally people eat Stilton at Christmas, pared with pears and a glass of Port.
