Whisky and Wyke Bonfire Cheese pairings

Wyke Bonfire Cheese whisky pairing header

I have not done a whisky and cheese pairing for ages.  I have been savoring all the old favourites, so it is high time I try something again. The Wyke cheese selection at Checkers is amazing.  The mature cheddar is a firm favorite in our house and regularly paired with the peatier drams.  A couple of weeks ago I found a Wyke Bonfire cheese which is a smoked mature cheddar with paprika.  It sounded rather delicious, so I decided, this is the perfect cheese to experiment with.

Whisky Chocolate pairing 2017 Edition

Whisky chocolate pairing 1027 edition header

Welcome 2017!  The end of an old year and a new beginning.  For me, 2017 started with a bang. Or rather the sound of a small firework war as the neighbourhood set off (illegal)  firework after firework.  I stood  on the patio, with a view of the horizon, while watching hundreds of fireworks greet the New Year.  My poor dogs were dozed up on Rescue Remedy and sleeping soundly.  The noisy fireworks woke my 5 yo, who also joined me for the free display. Shall we try Naked? Naked Grouse

Naked Grouse Blended whisky

In addition to our regular single malt favourites, to spice things up, we have added a blended whisky to our tasting schedule every now and again. Last year, this led us to the Black Grouse which we loved and which we paired with some spicy Indian food. On reading up about the Grouse brand, I noted that they made a Naked Grouse version. And with a name like that… we had to have it. So, on the way back from London, I grabbed this award-winning Grouse. I see that it is available in SA as well. The Famous Grouse is a brand of blended Scotch whisky, first produced by Matthew Gloag & Son.

Whisky and Gouda with Cumin Pairing

Mature Gouda with Cumin and whisky pairing Whisky and Gouda

About 2 weeks ago, I blogged about a Mature Gouda and Highland Whisky pairing. We tried the mature Gouda with various Highland Whiskies as well as with a Dutch Whisky. The 8 yo Millstone French Oak whisky was a great companion to the mature Gouda. To my surprise, the Tomatin 12 yo also made a good pairing. Besides the Mature Gouda, I also picked up a Gouda with Cumin cheese from the Gestam range at Checkers Cheese World.

Whisky and Mature Gouda Pairing

Mature Gouda and whisky pairing

Last week I wandered past our local Checkers Cheese World and grabbed some imported Gestam Mature Gouda. They had the Gestam Gouda with Cumin as well and this also got dropped into my shopping basket. Naturally my mind wandered to a whisky mature Gouda Pairing. Gouda is a Dutch yellow cheese made from cow’s milk. It is named after the city of Gouda in the Netherlands. It is one of the most popular cheeses worldwide. There is mention of Gouda cheese in historical document dating back to 1184.
