It was a dark and stormy night… Thunder storms are a regular occurrence in summer. After a hot day, afternoons cool down with dark clouds gathering and lightning that streak across the sky. When a storm hit in the dark of night, it can be really scary. I was standing in the doorway, listening to the thunder and seeing the lighting flash accross the horizon. The wind howling around the house and rattling at the windows; rain pouring on the roof. The noice made by the storm drowned out all other sounds.

I have not done a whisky and cheese pairing for ages. I have been savoring all the old favourites, so it is high time I try something again. The Wyke cheese selection at Checkers is amazing. The mature cheddar is a firm favorite in our house and regularly paired with the peatier drams. A couple of weeks ago I found a Wyke Bonfire cheese which is a smoked mature cheddar with paprika. It sounded rather delicious, so I decided, this is the perfect cheese to experiment with.
Welcome 2017! The end of an old year and a new beginning. For me, 2017 started with a bang. Or rather the sound of a small firework war as the neighbourhood set off (illegal) firework after firework. I stood on the patio, with a view of the horizon, while watching hundreds of fireworks greet the New Year. My poor dogs were dozed up on Rescue Remedy and sleeping soundly. The noisy fireworks woke my 5 yo, who also joined me for the free display. But before all the colorful and noisy fireworks, we had a few taste explosions of our own.
About 2 weeks ago, I blogged about a Mature Gouda and Highland Whisky pairing. We tried the mature Gouda with various Highland Whiskies as well as with a Dutch Whisky. The 8 yo Millstone French Oak whisky was a great companion to the mature Gouda. To my surprise, the Tomatin 12 yo also made a good pairing. Besides the Mature Gouda, I also picked up a Gouda with Cumin cheese from the Gestam range at Checkers Cheese World.
