Cutty Sark blended Scotch whisky

Many many years ago, a group of friends went for a holiday in Zimbabwe.  We first stopped off in the rugged Eastern Highland for some trout fishing and then made our way up to Lake Kariba.  There we stayed in the Cutty Sark Hotel while exploring the beautiful dam and finding tiger fish.  The name Cutty Sark alway stayed with me and reminded me of wonderful times with good friends.  When I saw a whisky with that name, I just had to have it.

It was a dark and stormy night…

Whisky to savour during a storm header

It was a dark and stormy night… Thunder storms are a regular occurrence in summer.  After a hot day, afternoons cool down with dark clouds gathering and lightning that streak across the sky.  When a storm hit in the dark of night, it can be really scary.  I was standing in the doorway, listening to the thunder and seeing the lighting flash accross the horizon.  The wind howling around the house and rattling at the windows;  rain pouring on the roof.  The noice made by the storm drowned out all other sounds.

Whisky and Wyke Bonfire Cheese pairings

Wyke Bonfire Cheese whisky pairing header

I have not done a whisky and cheese pairing for ages.  I have been savoring all the old favourites, so it is high time I try something again. Welcome 2017!  The end of an old year and a new beginning.  For me, 2017 started with a bang. Or rather the sound of a small firework war as the neighbourhood set off (illegal)  firework after firework.  I stood  on the patio, with a view of the horizon, while watching hundreds of fireworks greet the New Year.  My poor dogs were dozed up on Rescue Remedy and sleeping soundly.  The noisy fireworks woke my 5 yo, who also joined me for the free display. But before all the colorful and noisy fireworks, we had a few taste explosions of our own.

Shall we try Naked? Naked Grouse

Naked Grouse Blended whisky

In addition to our regular single malt favourites, to spice things up, we have added a blended whisky to our tasting schedule every now and again. Last year, this led us to the Black Grouse which we loved and which we paired with some spicy Indian food. On reading up about the Grouse brand, I noted that they made a Naked Grouse version. And with a name like that… we had to have it. So, on the way back from London, I grabbed this award-winning Grouse. I see that it is available in SA as well. The Famous Grouse is a brand of blended Scotch whisky, first produced by Matthew Gloag & Son.
