Three Ships Pinotage Cask Finish

Three Ships Pinotage Cask Finish whisky

After months of anticipation, … the big day has finally arrived. Today, starting at 12:00pm, 500 very lucky people will have the chance to get their hands on a bottle of 15 yo Three Ships Pinotage Cask Finish whisky. It is a first for South Africa and the World. A whisky finished in casks previously used for the maturation of Pinotage – the uniquely South African wine cultivar.

The Three Ships 15 Year Old Pinotage Cask Finish is the oldest, proudly South African whisky. Crafted by Master Distiller Andy Watts, who sought to capture the unique heritage of South Africa in this rich, complex and unique whisky.

The Three Ships 15 Year Old Pinotage Cask Finish is the second release in the Master’s Collection series. Last year they released the Three Ships PX Cask, which sold out within days.

Today, starting at 12:00, the first 500 bottles of the Pinotage Cask will be available for purchase, during a live online sale at The Masters Collection. Why am I so excited? Because I have tasted this remarkable release. Last week, the Pinotage Cask Finish was revealed to a select few whisky aficionados and people in the know at a magnificent event in Sandton. Included on the guest list was Tiffany from AsToldByTiffany who I was fortunate to meet. She wrote also wrote about the special event on her blog.

The Three Ships Pinotage Cask Finish Launch

The Three Ships brand team headed up by Ebith and Linda from Jigsaw, the PR Company, converted an empty shop into a beautiful dining area. Blush grapefruit and mint cocktails greeted us at the entrance.  They were so delicious, I had 3. Fortunately they were virgin cocktails.

The tables were decorated in pinotage blush and white colours. There were blush tinted flowers everywhere, soft lighting and great music. A Cape Town culinary team prepared the food and chose special flavours to match the whisky. To launch the Pinotage Cask, an unusual technology presentation happened right in front on our plates. Andy gave some background on his inspiration for the release. But the star of the show was the opening of the first bottle of Three Ships Pinotage Cask Finish.

After the months of anticipation, we had the chance to taste this bold new whisky. Bottled at 46.2% ABV this blush coloured whisky has picked up some of the raspberry, blackberry and plum notes of a pinotage. In the background there is grain, oak and earthy spices and it all blends superbly to make one huge mouth full.   Wonderfully delicious! A true piece of South African history. The grain and malt components of the whisky were first matured separately in American casks before being finished for different periods in eight casks previously used for Pinotage.

If you like drinking pinotage, this is a whisky that you will enjoy. It has the same fruity earthy notes of a great pinotage, but with the winning grain and malt whisky notes.  I preferred the Pinotage Cask Finish with a few drops of water to bring down the ABV and release more of the fruity tones.

There are only 3 500 bottles available. The first batch of 500 will be released on the 5th of October via The Masters Collection and the rest of the bottles will be available from the 8th of  October from selected retailers, Vinoteque, WhiskyBrother, at The James Sedgwick Distillery and from Big Five Duty Free stores.  A wonderful event, shared with some wonderful friends!

What are you waiting for… go get the Three Ships Pinotage Cask

Everyone form an orderly line behind me… Right… nearly 12:00… Grab this amazing dram before it disappears.  I am one of the first in the queue. #PinotageCaskFinish
