Roydon Camembert whisky pairing

A few weeks ago, we came across a Fairview Roydon Camembert cheese at Woolworths. We loved the Camembert and whisky pairing we tried last year. Having never tried a Roydon, it landed in our basket. Made with cows’ milk and a dash of goats’ milk, the Roydon Camembert is produced in the traditional French method. The goats’ milk gives it a farmhouse flavour. Roydon Camembert ripens from the outside towards the middle. This Fairview Roydon Camembert has won numerous prizes in the World Cheese Awards.

I was expecting a similar taste to the Camembert, but we were pleasantly surprised. It was very creamy with a pungent, washed rind note. There was a tart taste to it and the Roydon had an aniseed after taste. It was delicious!

A great pairing! The Glenfiddich Rich Oak smoothed out the creamy texture of the Camembert and the cheese made the Glenfiddich richer and brought out more of the wood and sweetness. The cheese enhanced the fruity nature of the Glenfiddich.  More berries, nuts and oak also appeared.  We give this pairing a RATING: 3.5/5.

Another great pairing. It seems that this Roydon Camembert makes for great whisky pairings. The pairing with the Private Barrel Co. No 41 created a smooth, creamy rich combination that was just ‘morish’! You want to just have more and more. We give this pairing a RATING: 3.5/5.

Naked Grouse

O my, it is a cream and sweet fruit explosion. The Naked Grouse cuts through the goati’ness of the cheese and intensifies the creamy nature of the Roydon. The cheese enhanced the plump cherry, butterscotch, oak and spicy notes of the Naked Grouse. We gave this pairing a RATING: 4.5/5.

Laphroaig PX Cask

This Roydon can do no wrong when paired with whisky! The pairing with the Laphroaig PX Cask was delicious, smooth and rich. The Roydon smoothed out the smoky peat notes of the Laphroaig but enhanced the Christmas Cake, oak and spiciness. The Laphroaig balanced out the tart notes of the Roydon Camembert cheese and enhanced the summer spice. This pairing brought out the best of both. We give this pairing a RATING: 4.5/5.

What a delicious cheese.  This Roydon Camembert cheese can do no wrong.  It is simply delicious and pair wonderfully with whisky.  Paired with any of the drams above, it makes for a perfect winter after dinner cheese dessert.
