Whisky of the Week experiment with many of the well known cocktails to look at their history, and the best ingredients to use. I experiment to find out how easy it is to make them at home. From an Old Fashioned cocktail to a gin martini and even some of the tropical cocktails such as a Cuba Libre.
January and February are the hottest months on the island. The average temperature in Mauritius is around 32C with 75% humidity. In between the occasional tropical storm, this time of the year is hot and sticky.
Occasionally a girlfriend would ask me about whisky. Where do they start and what whisky to try are typical questions. My advice is always that the best place to start is a tasting session where someone can guide you.
Today I look at rum, especially the Suncamino rum. When I was growing up, rum was something only sailors drank. It was rough and ready, and the quality was poor at best. But this last year or 2, I have noticed more and more local and craft rum brands appearing.
