Loch Lomond Inchmurrin 12 year old Whisky

I am looking back at a dram I tasted last year during my visit to the Loch Lomond Distillery: The Loch Lomond Inchmurrin 12 year old single malt whisky. During August last year, I had the opportunity to go on a Loch Lomond distillery tour at their facility in Alexandria, located in the Scottish Highlands.

The tour detailed the entire distilling process and highlighted the wide range of whisky that Loch Lomond produces. A standout experience for many of us was watching the cooper skillfully craft and then char the barrels—a process not often witnessed firsthand.

After the tour, we moved on to what many would consider the main event: the tasting. We sampled several whiskies from the Loch Lomond 12 year old range, including the Inchmoan and Inchmurrin 12 year old expressions.

Loch Lomond has a long history of distilling, with records of whisky production around the loch dating back to 1814. The original Loch Lomond distillery was located at the north end of Loch Lomond near Tarbet, though it has since closed down.

In 1965, the Littlemill Distillery Company Ltd, owned by Duncan Thomas and American Barton Brands, began developing the current distillery site. Production started the following year, and the distillery has seen several upgrades over time. A key feature of Loch Lomond Distillery is its variety of stills, including a Coffey still, allowing it to produce grain and malt whisky.

Loch Lomond’s range includes several brands, such as Inchfad, Crotengea, Glen Douglass, and Craiglodge.

The Inchmurrin 12 year old whisky is unpeated, distilled in the high strength straight neck stills.  It is aged in selected American Oak casks with a mix of bourbon, refilled American Oak, and recharred casks.

Loch Lomond named the whisky after Inchmurrin island, the largest and most southerly island in Loch Lomond. It reaches a height of 89 metres towards the north and is primarily wooded. Inchmurrin was the site of a 7th-century monastery, with a chapel dedicated to Saint Mirin.

Loch Lomond Inchmurrin 12 year old Whisky Review

ABV: 46%

COLOUR: Bright copper

REGION: Highlands

NOSE:  The Inchmurrin 12 year old whisky has vibrant fruity sweetness, with layers of pear, red apples and ripe blueberries.  An undercurrent of cereals, allspice, ginger, pepper, and dry grassy notes balances a toffee sweetness. The Inchmurring has a distinctive nose.

PALATE: The palate bursts with peaches, red apples and pears, creating a rich, juicy fruit salad. There are hints of grapefruit, offering a zesty note with creamy fudge and vanilla floating around.  Milk chocolate and toasted oak mixed with black pepper and allspice provide a surprising twist in the background. Water smoothes the pepper notes and makes it creamier.

FINISH: Medium length with a fruity sweetness, drying oak and peppery finish.

RATING: EXCELLENT

A lovely dram. Probably my favourite 12 year old single malt from Loch Lomond. It’s a lively, sweet, and versatile dram, ideal for those who enjoy fruit-forward whiskies with a creamy texture.

The Loch Lomond Inchmurrin 12 year old whisky is approachable yet complex. Perfect for pairing with fruit-based desserts, spiced cakes, or simply enjoying on its own during a cosy evening. If you’re looking for a whisky that delivers excitement and comfort, this one is ideal.

The Inchmurrin 12 year old whisky is available on Amazon and retail for around £34.
