In October 2015, I saw South African whisky history being made. It was wonderful to watch. Sitting at my PC in Johannesburg, I saw bottle after bottle of Three Ships PX Cask taken off the shelve and signed for by the talented Master Distiller, Andy Watts. It was the long-awaited launch of the Three Ships PX Cask Finish Single Barrel whisky. It did not disappoint!
After trying it for the first time last year, Ballantines has quickly become my favourite blended whisky. The Ballantine’s Finest received my first divine rating, and the Ballantine’s 17 year old was my Blend of the Year 2014.
Two years ago, while travelling through Dullstroom, we tried some whisky from an, up to that point, unknown but intriguing-sounding bottler. Right there and then, I fell in love with Wemyss Malts.
In October 2013, I tasted the William Grant & Sons Monkey Shoulder blended malt expression and loved it. Monkey Shoulder blended malt is a blend of three William Grant single malts. I have various expressions from Glenfiddich and The Balvenie, but I have never heard of the Kininvie distillery.
Today something from the Scottish Highlands, the Dalwhinnie 15 year old single malt Scotch whisky. The village of Dalwhinnie in Scotland is situated in the Cairngorm National Park. The builders chose the site for this Highland distillery for its access to water from the Lochan-Doire-Uaine spring.
This whisky I want to look at this week is the Santis Malt whisky Alpstein Edition no 7. When I think back to my travels around Switzerland, I think of mountains and lakes next to quaint towns and lots of delicious chocolate. Certainly not whisky.
