Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon Whiskey Review

Woodford Reserve double oaked bourbon
A while ago, I was lucky enough to attend an event featuring both Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve — a perfect evening for any bourbon lover. That’s where I first discovered the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Kentucky Straight bourbon whiskey, and let me tell you, it was love at first sip.

The moment that creamy, toasted sweetness hit my palate, it instantly reminded me of a comforting bowl of Malva pudding — warm, rich, and utterly indulgent. It was a pairing made in heaven, and I knew right then this bottle would have a permanent spot in my whisky cabinet.

A Taste of Tradition

For those unfamiliar, Malva pudding is a South African favourite — a decadent dessert with Cape Malay roots. It’s made with apricot jam, soaked in a caramelised sauce, and usually served hot with custard or ice cream. Some even add a splash of brandy for that extra kick.

Much like this dessert, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is comfort in a glass — familiar, satisfying, and a little bit luxurious.

I’ve always been a fan of the Woodford Reserve Bourbon lineup. It’s a versatile pour — great neat, solid over ice, and brilliant in a classic Old Fashioned. But the Double Oaked version? That’s where things get interesting.

What Makes Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Different?

The Double Oaked begins life just like the original Woodford Reserve, but then it takes a unique turn. After the initial ageing, it’s re-barreled into freshly toasted, lightly charred oak casks for a second maturation.

This extra time in deeply toasted oak transforms the bourbon — drawing out richer layers of vanilla, dark fruit, caramel, and spice. The result is a whiskey that’s deeper, smoother, and more indulgent than the core expression. Fun fact: this was the first new Woodford Reserve release in over 15 years, and it was well worth the wait.

Review and tasting notes Woodford Reserve Double Oaked with glass

COUNTRY: USA

ABV: 43.2%

COLOUR: Golden mahogany

NOSE: Lift the glass and you’re met with inviting aromas of Malva pudding, apricot jam, dark cherries, caramel, and honey. Creamy vanilla with hints of candied fruit and gentle cinnamon spice.

PALATE: Smooth, rich, and layered. Honeyed oak meets toasted vanilla, while notes of dark chocolate, cherries and baking spices dance together. Add a drop of water and the sweetness blooms beautifully, revealing even more depth.

FINISH: The Double Oaked bourbon has a medium length finish but is luxuriously creamy. There is cinnamon, honey, and toasted oak linger.

RATING: EXCELLENT

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is the kind of bourbon that doesn’t need to show off. It’s smooth, confident, and deeply satisfying — a whiskey for those who appreciate craftsmanship and flavour over hype.

There’s a richness to it that hits all the right notes: sweet, spicy, and just a touch smoky. Perfect for slow evenings or when you want something indulgent without being over the top.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try pairing it with Malva pudding — or, for a savoury twist, a creamy French Brie or Camembert. The soft, buttery texture of the cheese complements the bourbon’s sweet oak character beautifully.

And yes, I did a side-by-side with the Jim Beam Double Oak. Let’s just say, in my book, the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is the clear winner; smoother, richer, and far more refined.

I have spotted this release on Amazon in the affordable category.  Slightly more expensive than the standard Woodford Bourbon but so worth the extra cost.
