Just before I left on holiday, a beautiful box landed on my doorstep with a whiskey inside I’d never heard of. Elector Irish Whiskey is a 12 year old blend, and I’ll admit that the name intrigued me before I’d even pulled the cork. It turned out to be the first dram I poured after getting back from Scotland, and it was a fine one to return to.
The name was inspired by the seven electors who shaped the course of the Holy Roman Empire. Men who worked quietly behind the scene, choosing emperors without ever needing the throne themselves. Their Latin motto, audentes fortuna iuvat, “fortune favours the bold,” sets the tone for what’s in the glass.
Elector Irish Whiskey is built in the traditional Irish style: a blend of malt and grain whiskey, matured in oak with a share of sherry casks, and given a full 12 years under Ireland’s mild winters and warming Atlantic currents. The result is a whiskey that’s had time to find its balance.
VIP Liquors brought the release to South Africa. The team went looking for an Irish whiskey with restraint and maturity. They wanted something for drinkers who want substance over drama. Elector Irish Whiskey has since backed that up, taking home a Silver Medal at the 2026 London Spirits Competition.

Tasting Notes: Elector 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey

COLOUR: Light pale amber
ABV: 43%
NOSE: Clean and elegant with notes of pine needles, soft florals, and a fruity sweetness that leans into vanilla and oak. There’s a fig and warm berry crumble note underneath. Gentle, restrained, well-composed.
PALATE: There’s no mistaking this for anything but Irish whiskey. Smooth and unhurried, with red fruit and raisin sweetness, vanilla, oak, and a touch of baking spice. An oily, nutty note runs through it, with faint sherry and grain sweetness. Some florals sit quietly in the background. No water needed. This dram is built to be sipped neat. Medium-bodied but complex. It doesn’t shout for attention; it earns it.
FINISH: Long and lingering, with lemon pepper, dried oak, and sherry-soaked sultanas closing things out.
RATING: EXCELLENT
I was a little wary when I saw this was an SA-market exclusive. Those releases can go either way. But VIP Liquors got this one right. Elector Irish Whiskey is smooth, complex, and dangerously easy to drink. It has a great balance between the fruity sweetness and delicate spices mixed with some oak.
This isn’t a heavy winter pour. It’s a whiskey built for summer months. The kind of dram you hand to a mate on the patio as the sun goes down. Pair it with a dried fruit and nut platter, or a wedge of soft cheese like camembert, and you’ve got a proper session sorted.
