The last time I reviewed a Glen Grant whisky was in 2019, when I tasted the excellent Glen Grant 12 year old Non-Chill-Filtered whisky. Looking back, I’ve realised I’ve neglected one of my favourite Speyside distilleries for far too long. It’s time to correct that oversight with a closer look at the Glen Grant 10 single malt whisky.
Glen Grant is a distillery that has quietly built a reputation for being an approachable, easy-drinking Speyside single malt, making it an excellent choice for both newcomers and seasoned whisky drinkers looking for an affordable everyday dram.
My First Experience with Glen Grant 10
The first time I tasted the Glen Grant 10 year old whisky was many years ago at a whisky show when my good friend Bernard Gutman poured me a generous sample. It immediately impressed me with its elegant fruitiness and smooth character.
I’ve long been a fan of Glen Grant. The Major’s Reserve remains firmly on my list of the best affordable whiskies, while the Glen Grant 12 year old Non-Chill Filtered is one of the finest examples of classic Speyside whisky I’ve tasted. Whenever I attend a whisky festival, the Glen Grant distillery stand is always near the top of my must-visit list.
The History of Glen Grant
Brothers John and James Grant founded the distillery in 1840 in Rothes, Speyside. Over time, Glen Grant has become one of Scotland’s most respected whisky distilleries.
After the founders passed away, James “The Major” Grant inherited the distillery. His innovative thinking helped shape Glen Grant’s future. His adventurous personality earned him legendary status in the Scotch whisky world.
The Major was known for embracing new technology. He became the first person in the Highlands to own a motor car, introduced electric lighting to the distillery, and continually experimented with ways to improve whisky production. Many of the distillery’s unique characteristics today can be traced back to his pioneering spirit.
Chivas Brothers previously owned Glen Grant before becoming part of the Campari Group in 2005, where it continues to thrive as one of the world’s best-selling single malts.
Today, the core range includes the 10 year old, 12 year old and 18 year old expressions, alongside a growing selection of limited editions and independent bottlings that are highly sought after by collectors.
Glen Grant 10 at a Glance
The Glen Grant 10 year old single malt whisky is matured exclusively in ex-bourbon casks, allowing the distillery’s naturally light, fruity spirit to shine. The bottle received a modern redesign in 2016, giving the range a cleaner, more contemporary appearance while keeping the whisky inside unchanged.
One of its biggest strengths is value for money. It remains widely available and is often found at a very competitive price, making it one of the better entry-level Speyside single malts on the market. I have spotted it on Amazon in the affordable category.

Glen Grant 10 year old Whisky Review
REGION: Speyside
ABV: 43%
COLOUR: Golden Yellow
NOSE: Fresh and elegant with aromas of ripe pear, honey and creamy vanilla. Underneath are notes of fresh malt, hints of spearmint and a touch of coriander that add brightness and complexity.
PALATE: Medium-bodied and exceptionally smooth. Sweet orchard fruits dominate, with ripe pear and crisp apple, supported by honey, vanilla, and gentle oak spice. A splash of water introduces subtle lemon-pepper and a delicate smokiness, lifting the fresh-fruit notes. While enjoyable, the palate doesn’t quite develop the depth or complexity found in some of Glen Grant’s older expressions.
FINISH:The finish is medium in length with lingering notes of toffee, cinnamon and gentle oak.
RATING: VERY GOOD
The Glen Grant 10 year old is an enjoyable, easy-drinking Speyside single malt that delivers exactly what many whisky drinkers are looking for: quality, consistency and excellent value.
Its approachable character makes it an ideal first step into the world of Speyside Scotch whisky, especially for those who enjoy lighter, fruit-forward drams. The bourbon cask maturation allows the distillery’s elegant spirit to shine without overwhelming the palate.
Personally, I still prefer the Glen Grant 12 year old, which offers noticeably more depth, richer fruit and greater complexity. However, that doesn’t diminish what the Glen Grant 10 year old whisky brings to the table.
If you’re looking for an affordable everyday Speyside whisky that’s smooth, approachable and packed with classic orchard fruit flavours, the Glen Grant 10 year old ticks all the boxes.
