Maker’s Mark vs Woodford Reserve Bourbon

Maker's Mark bourbon vs Woodford Reserve Bourbon whiskey comparison.

It has been far too long since I last tackled a bourbon comparison, and these posts are always some of the most enjoyable to write. The last side-by-side focused on rye whiskey, but now it is time for a heavyweight Kentucky showdown: Maker’s Mark vs Woodford Reserve bourbon.

These are two bourbons I return to again and again. Both are affordable, widely available, and dangerously easy to drink. More importantly, they helped shape my appreciation for bourbon in the first place. But while they may sit on the same shelf, they deliver very different drinking experiences.

So which one deserves a permanent place in your whisky cabinet?

Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whiskey

Beam Suntory produces Maker’s Mark at the historic distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. It is instantly recognisable thanks to its squat bottle and signature hand-dipped red wax seal, one of the most iconic looks in bourbon.

What makes Maker’s Mark stand out is its mash bill. Instead of using rye, the distillery uses red winter wheat. The recipe consists of 70% corn, 16% wheat, and 14% malted barley. That wheated profile creates a softer, rounder bourbon with less spice and a smoother mouthfeel.

Maker’s Mark carries no official age statement, but most estimates place it at about 6 years old at bottling. The lineup also includes excellent expressions such as Maker’s 46 and the superb Maker’s Mark Cask Strength.

Retailing in the affordable category, it remains one of the best-value bourbons on the market. It is approachable enough for newcomers yet flavorful enough for experienced bourbon drinkers. I have spotted it on Amazon.

It also performs brilliantly in cocktails, particularly a whiskey sour or Boulevardier.

Woodford Reserve Bourbon Whiskey

Woodford Reserve is another staple in my drinks cabinet. Produced by Brown-Forman, the brand traces its roots back to 1812 at the former Old Oscar Pepper Distillery, one of Kentucky’s most historic bourbon sites.

Unlike Maker’s Mark, Woodford Reserve emphasises rye spice in its mash bill. The recipe contains 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley, giving it a richer spice profile and more complexity on the palate.

The Woodford Reserve bourbon whiskey is matured for at least six years and bottled as a small-batch Kentucky Straight bourbon. Other standout releases include the excellent Woodford Reserve Double Oaked and the Woodford Reserve Rye.

Typically retailing in the affordable category, I have spotted it on Amazon. Woodford Reserve feels slightly more refined and cocktail-focused than Maker’s Mark. In my opinion, it makes one of the best Old Fashioneds you can pour without moving into premium bourbon pricing.

My RatingExcellentExcellent

To keep things fair, we tasted both bourbons blind in unmarked glasses. Bourbon comparisons become surprisingly difficult once the labels disappear. Without the familiar bottle staring back at you, small details suddenly matter far more.

Glass 1 turned out to be the Woodford Reserve, while Glass 2 was the Maker’s Mark. I deliberately avoided trying to guess which was which. Instead, I focused purely on which bourbon I preferred in the glass.

For me, the winner was the Woodford Reserve bourbon. The sweeter, fruit-forward character worked perfectly for my palate. Notes of condensed milk, vanilla, dark chocolate, toasted oak, and soft baking spice gave it a richer and slightly more luxurious feel. The finish lingered beautifully with sweet oak and gentle spice.

John, however, preferred the Maker’s Mark bourbon. He found it slightly livelier, with more pronounced vanilla, caramel, cherry sweetness, and a touch more spice than expected from a wheated bourbon. The red fruit notes really stood out, making it instantly recognisable once he identified it.

Interestingly, John correctly guessed which bourbon was which during the blind tasting. The cherry and caramel profile of Maker’s Mark is a genuine giveaway once you become familiar with it.

Final Verdict

This is an incredibly difficult comparison because both bourbons are outstanding for the price.

If you enjoy softer, smoother bourbons with caramel, vanilla, and sweet cherry notes, Maker’s Mark is the easy choice. It is approachable, versatile, and one of the best entry points into bourbon whiskey.

If you prefer a richer bourbon with more oak spice, dark sweetness, and cocktail versatility, Woodford Reserve edges ahead.

For me, Woodford Reserve narrowly wins this battle thanks to its deeper flavour profile and luxurious sweetness. But honestly, I would never complain about finding either of these bottles in my glass. They are both modern bourbon classics for a reason.
