Glenfiddich 12 year old Whisky
Founded in 1886 by William Grant in Dufftown, Speyside, Glenfiddich remains one of the few major Scotch distilleries still owned by the founding family. The name Glenfiddich translates from Gaelic as “Valley of the Deer,” a fitting tribute to the famous stag that appears on every bottle.

The biggest distinction is that the Glenfiddich 12 is a single malt, meaning every drop comes from a single distillery and is made with malted barley alone.
The Chivas Regal 12, on the other hand, is a blended Scotch whisky that combines malt whiskies from several distilleries with carefully selected grain whiskies to achieve a consistent, approachable flavour profile.
Despite these differences, both are medium-bodied, exceptionally smooth and incredibly easy to drink. They’re also two of the best entry-level Scotch whiskies available, making them ideal for newcomers.
Trying these whiskies side by side really highlights how varied Scotch whisky can be. On the nose, The Glenfiddich 12 opens with fresh pear, honey, soft vanilla and gentle oak. Everything feels bright, crisp and elegant.
The Chivas Regal 12 offers a richer aroma of ripe apples, cherries, cinnamon and creamy vanilla, with slightly more spice immediately noticeable.
The differences continue on the palate. The Chivas Regal 12 delivers baked apples, toffee, toasted oak, cinnamon and black pepper. It’s warm, rounded and carries a little more spice throughout the tasting experience.

If you prefer a whisky with a little more spice, richness and warmth, Chivas Regal 12 year old is an excellent blended Scotch that consistently over-delivers for its price.
Personally, I’d happily keep both bottles on my whisky shelf. However, if I found myself stranded somewhere with only one dram to choose, I’d probably reach for the Glenfiddich 12. My palate naturally leans towards sweeter Speyside whiskies, and its softer finish edges this contest. John, however, enjoys whiskies with a little more spice and body, so his choice would be the Chivas Regal 12.
