I recently realised I’d never compared Chivas Regal 12 and Jameson side by side. At first glance, it might seem like an unusual matchup. After all, one is a blended Scotch whisky, and the other is a classic Irish whiskey. However, tasting different styles side by side is one of the best ways to appreciate what makes each whisky unique.
I’ve previously compared Chivas Regal against Johnnie Walker Black Label and Glenfiddich 12 year old, so it was time to see how it stacked up against Ireland’s most famous whiskey.
Chivas Regal 12 vs Jameson: The Key Differences
Before I dive into the tasting notes, it’s worth understanding why these whiskies taste so different.
Chivas Regal 12 is a premium blended Scotch whisky made from a combination of carefully selected malt and grain whiskies. Every whisky in the blend has been matured for at least 12 years, resulting in a richer, sweeter and more layered dram.
Jameson, on the other hand, is a blended Irish whiskey made from pot still and grain whiskey. It is triple distilled and matured for a minimum of four years, producing the smooth, approachable style that has made Jameson famous around the world.
Although both are blends owned by Pernod Ricard, they offer completely different drinking experiences.
Chivas Regal 12 Year Old
The story of Chivas Brothers begins in 1801 when brothers James and John Chivas opened a luxury grocery store in Aberdeen. They supplied wealthy customers with premium foods, French brandies, coffee and exotic spices. Their cellar naturally became the ideal place to mature whisky.
As demand grew for smoother, more refined whiskies, the brothers began blending aged malts and grain whiskies to create their own distinctive style. Their success eventually led to the creation of Chivas Regal, which was first introduced to the American market in 1909.
Although production was interrupted during Prohibition and the Second World War, Chivas Regal returned stronger than ever and remains one of Scotland’s most recognised premium blended whiskies.
Today, the heart of the blend comes from the beautiful Strathisla Distillery in Speyside, Scotland. Chivas Regal 12 is joined by other popular expressions, including Chivas Extra, Chivas XV and Chivas 18 year old.

Jameson Irish Whiskey
Few names are as closely associated with Irish whiskey as Jameson. John Jameson founded the Bow Street Distillery in Dublin in 1780. During the nineteenth century, Jameson became one of the world’s most respected whiskey brands, but political unrest, trade disputes, and American Prohibition severely impacted Irish whiskey exports.
A major turning point came in the 1960s, when Jameson, Powers, and Cork Distilleries merged to form Irish Distillers. Production later moved to the impressive Midleton Distillery in County Cork, where Jameson is still produced today.
Jameson has become the world’s best-selling Irish whiskey thanks to its signature triple distillation, which creates an exceptionally smooth, approachable spirit. Jameson pairs particularly well with smoked salmon, dried fruits and, perhaps surprisingly, Hawaiian pizza.

The first thing that strikes me in this Chivas Regal 12 vs Jameson comparison is just how different the aromas are. The Chivas Regal 12 opens with crisp red apples, fresh-cut flowers and gentle oak. Vanilla, soft cinnamon and honey follow, creating a classic Speyside-style elegance.
Jameson immediately heads in a different direction. Fresh banana bread, ripe tropical fruits, caramel and gentle spice dominate the nose, making it sweeter and more vibrant than the Chivas. It is an inviting, expressive aroma that promises plenty of flavour.
For me, Jameson edges this round with a richer and more aromatic nose.
On the palate, the tables quickly turn. The Chivas Regal 12 delivers creamy malt, toasted oak, rich toffee and subtle berry sweetness. A pleasant black pepper spice adds structure, while the whisky carries an impressive medium-bodied mouthfeel. Everything feels balanced and mature, with each flavour complementing the next.
Jameson, despite its outstanding nose, doesn’t quite deliver the same complexity. The tropical fruit notes become much more restrained, replaced by gentle malt, vanilla, light aniseed and pepper. It remains exceptionally smooth and highly drinkable, but the flavour profile feels lighter and less developed.
It’s an enjoyable whiskey, but when tasted side by side, Chivas Regal offers more depth, richness and character.
Verdict: Chivas Regal 12 vs Jameson
This comparison highlights exactly why Scotch and Irish whiskey continue to attract different audiences.
Jameson is incredibly approachable. Its smooth character makes it an excellent introduction to whiskey, and it’s one of the finest choices for highballs, whiskey ginger or an Irish Coffee.
Chivas Regal 12, however, is the more rewarding whisky when enjoyed neat. The extra years of maturation provide noticeably greater richness, complexity and balance. It feels more luxurious from the first sip to the last.
And the winner is…
Jameson Irish whiskey is smooth, approachable and hugely versatile. Jameson is an excellent everyday Irish whiskey, though it lacks the complexity and maturity of Chivas Regal.
The Chivas Regal 12 is elegant, creamy and wonderfully balanced. Chivas Regal 12 remains one of the best-value blended Scotch whiskies on the market. This bottle easily takes the crown.
